4,000 UGC approved teaching posts lying vacant in DU

Over 4,000 University Grants Commission (UGC) approved permanent
teaching posts are lying vacant in University of Delhi. With the delay in filling
up of these posts, Delhi University Teachers’ Association has threatened to go
on a mass strike. About 40 per cent teachers teaching in the various colleges
are contractual teachers said association members.

“University VC Dinesh Singh will be held responsible for any
kind of teacher’s outburst if he continues with his autocracies,” said DUTA
president Amar Deo Sharma.

The UGC through its various circulars starting February 2010
to April 2012 has asked all the Central University including DU to fill the
teaching posts lying vacant.

“The university wants to squeeze the teaching work load and
run the university with ad hoc teachers,” said Sharma. Sharma also alleged that
even the permanent teachers are being deprived of the benefits they are
entitled to in the new service conditions.

The DUTA has threatened to go on a strike, if their demands
are not met. “The VC is only buying time from the teachers. The DUTA Executive
will now meet and decide on its action plan to fight the autocracies of the VC,”
said DUTA vice president Harish Khanna.
