In the current arrangement, 60 percent of the trainings are directly under Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship while 40 percent are across other Central Ministries.
The Minister said that Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), which was launched on July 15, 2015 by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, alone has witnessed more than 20 lakh people, of which 40 per cent are women candidates, being trained in their choice of skills.
Where we stand
At present hundreds of thousands of jobs are created in India every year but most of them were in the unorganised sector. Jayant Krishna, CEO of the National Skill Development Corporation NSDC talking about the problem of skill gap said that India is producing graduates who have theoretical knowledge but no practical experience. A person can explain his or her learning on paper, but may have never done it in actual work situations.
“We need to find ways and create avenues to make them skilled in the area of their choice and help them become an employable workforce as per local and global industry requirements”, Krishna said to IANS.
Need for skilled workforce
Provision of a skilled workforce is a pre-requisite for a growing economy and success of various other initiative of the government such as Make in India, Digital India, Smart Cities, rapid highway constructions etc.
Rudy said, the number of ITIs in the country has increased from 10,750 in May 2014 to over 13,105 in May 2016 and these will be further scale up to 18000 by September this year. More than 1141 new ITIs have been added and 1.73 seats have been increased in the last one year. MSDE has also enabled the opening up of 5 new RVTIs for women in skill development.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is aiming extensive modernization of the existing ITI ecosystem and establishment of new ITIs and Multi Skill Training Institutes (MSTIs), so that more and more people get skills of recognized standards which will help them become more employable for the industries. The MSTIs will be set up in the unserved areas/blocks to improve the outreach of the Skill India initiative.
Demand for skilled professionals in BFSI
According to National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), though BFSI industry is estimated to create 2, 45,000 job openings by 2017, the sector is plagued by unemployability. More than 74% of workforce in the industry is inadequately skilled calling for programmes that addresses the gap. The objective of the partnership is to provide students with systematic training and certificates of competency that will improve their employability potentials. The different programmes offered are developed by NSDC through Sector Skills Councils to bridge the gap and meet the industry requirement.

By 2017, the region alone is expected to create around 33% of the total employment generated by the BFSI industry. Data Scientists in demand
Demand for data analytics skills has risen globally and employers seek to hire data driven people. In fact, the business social network LinkedIn listed Statistical Analysis and Data Mining as the number two skill in their list of the “25 Professional Skills That Will Be Hot in 2016,” and a joint study from Burning Glass Technologies and General Assembly reported demand for data science skills has tripled over the past five years.

Other emerging areas
There are some more emerging areas Beauty and Wellness sector where there is demand for skilled women professionals. Sanjeev Duggal, CEO & Managing Director, Centum Learning said, “There are enormous career opportunities opening up in this sphere. India has the highest acceptance and demand for beauty and wellness services. However, the growing attrition rate of skilled workforce and lack of quality personnel are two major challenges that the Beauty and Wellness industry faces. So it is essential to build quality talent pool for an industry which deals with humans directly.”
To motivate young women further, the reward amount for the Beauty and Wellness sector under the PMKVY was increased to Rs. 10,000 for which training is provided on higher levels of the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). Beauty and Wellness arena is just one of two sectors (the other being healthcare) where the reward amount under the PMKVY has been revised.
