Famous theatre personality and Jnanapeeth awardee Girish Karnad has been named as the member of the HRD committee that is constituted to prepare a concept on a University for Innovation in Liberal Arts.
Human Resource Development (HRD) has constituted a committee that will prepare concept on University for Innovation in Liberal Arts. The other members of the committee are Prof K G Subramanyan, Prof B N Goswamy, Prof Madhav Gadgil, Girish Karnad, Prof Sunil Khilnani, Ramachandra Guha and Prof Supriya Chaudhuri.
While Additional Secretary, Higher Education, Sunil Kumar would be convener and joint secretary in the Ministry of Culture T Kumar would be co-convener of the committee.
The committee has been given freedom to lay down its own procedure and it is expected to submit its report within three months. The committee has been asked to examine the limitations in the present approach to higher studies in the liberal arts and also to explore innovative institutional solutions.
The government has decided to establish Universities for Innovation, in the 11th and 12th five year plans. These universities will emerge as exemplars attracting quality talent, promoting education of the highest standards and conducting cutting-edge research.
Each of these universities will focus on an area or problem of significance to India, and build an ecosystem of research and teaching around different related disciplines and relevant fields of study, and search for solutions that are valid globally and in the proms, develop education at the under-graduate and higher levels.
