IBM to partner IITs, IIMs under shared university research

IBM has announced Shared University Research (SUR) awards
2013 for different projects related to Analytics and Cloud in collaboration
with leading educational institutes in the country – IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur,
Anna University, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, (VNIT) Nagpur,
Cummins College of Engineering for Women and IIM Udaipur.

The award will result in technical collaboration between the
institutes and relevant IBM experts and also provide access to IBM software
required for the successful completion of the projects.

Through Shared University Research (SUR), IBM partners with
different Universities to facilitate deep research involving multiple
disciplines and multiple agencies including the government bodies. These
projects result in solutions that impact the society and the planet by focusing
on applying industry-relevant technologies to solve real-world problems,
through academia-corporate partnerships.

Mezjan Dallas, Country Manager, University Relations, IBM
India said, “Through Shared University Research (SUR), IBM partners with
different Universities in India to facilitate deep research across multiple
disciplines. This year we have sponsored an exciting range of projects from
detection of diabetic retinopathy to analyzing the effects of algorithmic
trading. In addition, many of this year’s research projects are collaborative
in nature, between multiple universities, thereby enabling them to leverage one
another’s strengths and potentially create greater impact.”

Analytics for
healthcare

IBM along with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),
Kharagpur, Cummins College of Engineering for Women and a local charitable
hospital will develop a computer-assisted automated retinal image analyzer that
will help with early screening for loss of vision for diabetic’s patients, a
serious problem in India. The SUR will aim to extend the IIT-Kharagpur
algorithm and make it applicable to a wider set of patients.

Business Analytics
for financial markets

With IIM Udaipur, IBM is collaborating in the field of
Business Analytics for financial markets. The grant from IBM will support a
research project which will extensively use Data Analytics to focus on market
liquidity and efficiency while also helping management students gain expertise
in analytics. The institute is creating a Center for Business Analytics and
planning to incorporate a Business Analytics specialization into its Post
Graduate Program.

Dr Sumit Kumar, from IIM Udaipur faculty team said “The main
purpose of this research project is to study the impact of Algorithmic Trading
on market liquidity and efficiency from the perspective of all stakeholders,
namely, the traders, the regulator and the Government.”

Cloud Technologies

Extending the cloud collaboratory with IIT Bombay,
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, (VNIT) Nagpur and Anna
University will use the grant for developing an environment for conducting
research on different aspects of virtualization and cloud computing. The grant
would also be used to develop Under Graduate and Post Graduate level courses in
virtualization and cloud computing, enabling students to get hands on
experience on cloud technologies.

Prof Umesh Bellur, Department of Computer Science &
Engineering, IIT Bombay said, “The cloud manager and other artefacts developed
under the Cloud Collaboratory both at IIT Bombay and other institutes of the
SUR program will provide significant impetus to the adoption of cloud computing
in educational institutes in India and other countries. Specifically, it will
pave the way for the deployment of open standards based cloud computing
platforms.”
