IGNOU Shimla Study Centre at NIELIT, Jakhoo: Imparts IT education for generating employability

DOEACC
Society is a renowned name for implementing a joint scheme of All India Council
for Technical Education and Department of Information Technology (formerly
Department of Electronics (DOE)), Government of India. The main objective of
the scheme is to develop quality manpower in the field of IT by utilizing the
expertise available with the computer training institutes who are granted
accreditation for conducting specified levels of courses, subject to their
meeting well-defined norms and criteria. NIELIT, Shimla has also taken an
additional responsibility to train IGNOU learners in the region of Jakhoo,
Shimla.

Pratiyush
Guleria is presently heading the study centre 1123 (P) at NIELIT (National
Institute of Electronics and Information Technology), Shimla which is also
popularly known as RCC (Regional Computer Centre) in Jakhoo, close to Shimla.
This centre was established in the year 1992 when the need for computer
literacy started growing in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Therefore, in order
to support and cater the needs of the society the centre was established at
Jakhoo, Shimla.

According
to Guleria, the enrolment at the centre has recently jumped to a decent number
which includes learners from BCA, MCA and CIT. The infrastructure, as he says,
is well equipped to support large number of learners. The basic practice
followed at the centre is that the classes are scheduled as per the
availability and convenience of the learners. Lab facilities are available to
the learners on Saturdays and Sundays to get hand on experience on certain
concepts and theories. He said that the assignment problems are also discussed
by the faculty at their centre on regular basis. The best practice of the
centre, according to him, is that the assignments are evaluated in time and
feedbacks are given to the learners for further improvements.

Guleria
puts every effort to support the learners by providing e-books and other
resources. The Programme Study Centre also arranges best faculty for its
learners from reputed universities and colleges. The counselors associated with
the study centre are mostly work with the qualification of M. Tech. Their
teaching experience and record is also a major criterion which the centre looks
at before assigning them the job. Speaking on the relevance of the course
provided by IGNOU, he said that “I would like to see DOT NET in the course
module and other programmes in the web development as well.” He feels that
research area like Cloud Computing can be another section where learners can
acquire knowledge and gain expertise.

As
the content keeps on changing with time especially in computers, Guleria says
that he provides his learners with all new topics related topics for better
understanding. The centre works on developing the numerical ability of learners
on each topic. “The focus for our centre is also to prepare learners for
national level entrance examinations” he said. Speaking about the recent
developments at the study centre, Mr. Guleria proudly informed that an
extension sub branch has been started to cater to the needs of learners who
come from far flung areas.
