Sudhir Kumar Sopory has
become the new vice chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University.The President of India,
Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who is also the Visitor of the university, gave her
assent to the appointment of Sopory as the 11th vice-chancellor of the
Sources at the Ministry for
Human Resource Development revealed that Sopory has won the race for the top post ahead
of the HRD ministry’s favourite, Syed Ehtesham Hasnain, VC of Hyderabad
The HRD ministry received
the assent of the President’s office on December 31st, 2010. The
ministry intimated JNU and Sopory is likely to take over his charges from the
outgoing V-C, B B Bhattacharya, anytime next week.
Bhattacharya’s term came to
an end in June 2010 and a search committee headed by space scientist and
nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, K Kasturirangan, shortlisted Sopory’s name
in December 2010.
Sudhir Kumar Sopory is associated with the International Centre
for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi and is working on
plant molecular biology. Sopory was conferred the Bhatnagar Award of the
Council and Scientific and Industrial Research, India, 1987, and the
Chakravorty Award 1988, among others. Sopory has taught in University of Munich,
Germany and University of Texas at Austin, US, and has been a visiting
scientist with Max-Planck-Institute, Germany.
