Prof Suranjan Das gets second term as Calcutta University VC

Professor Suranjan Das tenure as
Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University has been extended. The state education
department has decided to re-appoint Das for the next four years. The usual
tenure of a VC is six years.

Earlier, Das’s tenure which ended on April
30, 2012, was extended by six months until the search committee selected the
new VC.

The search committee, formed by the
Chancellor of the University MK Naryanan to recommend names of probable
candidates for CU VC’s post, has recommended his name with Narayanan accepting
the recommendation and sending it to the Higher Education department for their

The official letter has been sent and Das
will join as the VC from May 24, 2012 informed senior officials in state’s
higher education department.

The development is significant as no VC
appointed during the Left rule has been given extension with the only exception
being Das.

Suranjan Das was appointed the pro-VC in
2002, he went onto become the vice-chancellor of Calcutta University on May 2,
2008, for a four-year term.
