Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Hyderabad is planning to recruit faculty on a contractual basis. The institute is planning to first offer job to teachers for a year and only after the annual assessment, which includes students’ evaluation as well their term would be extended. The institute is government funded however the new campus located in Hyderabad got initial financial support from the Azim Premji Foundation.
The decision on recruitment rules was taken as it was felt that faculty sign up with a lot of enthusiasm but, as years pass, the “promise of pension” turn many to deadwood, said sources.
“We are looking for the best teachers who can liven up our classroom. We are keen on appointing individuals who bring strong inter-disciplinary research experience and also are good teachers. We want individuals who will join a new institute and grow with it,” said Lakshmi Lingam, deputy director of the Hyderabad campus.
Speaking on the fact that some eminent faculty members might not be attracted to join due to the contractual clause, Lingam said that the permanent teaching berths supported by University Grants Commission for worthy candidates, “Also, if we find a good track record of a contractual faculty, they will find their way on the permanent rolls,” added Lingam.
TISS has however decided to offer decided to offer 6th Pay Commission salary scale to both contractual and the permanent teachers without any differentiation.
