The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked university-affiliated colleges across India to avail various UGC schemes till August 31.
The UGC offers financial assistance to colleges under schemes like organizing workshops and lectures, construction of women’s hostels and minor research projects for teachers. Earlier, the commission had extended the application date for these schemes from July 31 to August 31.
An official from the Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) said, “The UGC provides financial assistance to colleges to organize conferences, workshops and seminars among other schemes as well. These schemes will be continued in the UGC’s 12th plan period (2012-2017). For international-level conferences, the UGC has asked for clearance from the ministry of external affairs and has asked for a separate proposal.”
The official added that in the scheme for minor research projects, the UGC offers funds up to Rs 5 lakh for projects in streams like science, engineering and pharmacy. For courses like humanities, social sciences, arts and law, a funding of Rs 3 lakh is granted. “For the construction of a women’s hostel, a grant of Rs 40 to Rs 80 lakh is allowed depending on the number of female students and the availability of necessary infrastructural requirements and the actual need of the hostel at any particular location.”
The UGC circular stated that the proposal has to be submitted through the director of the Board of College and University Development (BCUD), reported ToI.
