UGC to discuss college autonomy with DU principals

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated the process of discussions with the principals of Delhi University colleges. An orientation programme on autonomous institutions is being held in central Delhi today.

Autonomy has been a contentious issue after St Stephen’s College’s governing body decided in-principle to accept the autonomous scheme. Other colleges that are participating in the deliberations are; Hindu College, Hansraj College and Sri Venkateswara College, .An autonomous college will no longer be affiliated to Delhi University and be free to decide its curriculum and take academic and administrative decisions. The Delhi University Teachers’ Association has, meanwhile, planned a protest at Dyal Singh College.

Teachers said that this is a direct attack on the federal structure of DU, as enshrined in the DU Act, 1922, reports IE.
