A panel set-up by University Grants Commission (UGC) has
recommended a ten-year term for a college principal instead of the current five
The panel revisited the University Grants Commission
Regulations, 2010, and has mooted apart from the appointment of a college
principal there should be eligibility for a reappointment of another five
years, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor
said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
At present, a principal gets a term of five years with the
eligibility for reappointment for one more term, Tharoor said.
The minister also added that the teaching, research and
administration experience for the post of principal is recommended to be
reduced from fifteen years to ten years.
“The committee has stated that it is important to recruit
dynamic and promising people for the pivotal post of principals in colleges and
reasonably young people who are deserving should not be unduly excluded on the
account of their age and experience,” he said.
