US, Australian,German universities keen to tie up with Indian Institutes

The representatives from US, Australia and Germany have expressed their keen interest to partner with Indian Higher Education Institutes. These representatives are participating in the ongoing EDGE conference in New Delhi.

Bringing the German perspective, Dr. Birgit Barden, Director-International Office, Leibniz Universität Hannover said, “355 universities exist in Germany. Right now 3,500 Indian students are in Germany compared to 25,000 Chinese students. For more Indian students to be in Germany, Indian universities need to aim for partners of their standard, rather than looking for a superior university.”

Prof. John Webb, Deputy Director, Australia India Institute, commented that the Australia-India Strategic Partnership Fund of $10 million per year is giving great impetus to partnerships of institutes from both these countries. He cited examples of TERI, IIT-Mumbai and Chemical Technology Institute in Hyderabad as examples.

According to Dr. Duleep Deosthale, Vice President, International Education, Manipal Education, “India is absent in US curriculum and there is a huge potential for Indian institutes to offer course materials and teachers on subjects from India like history, culture and changes in India.”

While putting the government perspective, Amit Khare, Jointt. Secretary, Department of Higher Education, MHRD, GoI commented that Education Councils are being set up involving different stakeholders including Business and Industry to facilitate International tie-ups in Higher Education sector. He also added that Foreign Education Providers bill is to be tabled in Parliament soon. Regulation and mandatory registration of Education Agents are also on anvil.

The annual EDGE conference brings together Vice-Chancellors, Presidents, Directors, Professors, Education Councils, Entrepreneurs and policy makers to interact, collaborate and understand the prevailing trends in the higher education sector..
